Who saved the Church

Apparently the Mormons have finally called a duck a duck and stated when the great apostasy occurred. 70 A.D. That's it. Surprisingly Mormons aren't alone in their prognosis of dating the the great falling away. Growing up, most books I read dated the time when the true church of Christ became paganistic around the time the Edict of Milan was passed. However, now it seems more popular to say that after the great squirrel fire of 70 A.D. in Jerusalem when their were more Romans and Greeks in the Church then Jews.

The question becomes when and by whom was the church rescued? This could, depending on whom you ask, have occurred anytime from Martin Luther in the mid 16th century to the latest guy who received a vision from God to start a new church that is the restoration of the true church of Jesus.

Thus, who dunnit? By whom and when was the church rescued from the hands of pagans and returned to its normal status? Also, why would Christ allow his Kingdom to fall away into ruin for hundreds even thousands of years?
